The Controversy Over Southbound Weapons Trafficking

$10

There are two main questions people want answered with regards to southbound weapons trafficking to Mexico: How many guns are illegally entering Mexico every year and going into the hands of drug cartels? And how many of those guns are coming from the United States?

The impossible search for answers to these questions has led to an incredibly heated debate between pro-gun lobby groups and those who seek to curb the availability - and ostensibly the southbound flow - of high-powered firearms. Scant government trace statistics hint strongly that the majority of cartel firepower is obtained in US gun shops and shows by straw buyers. However, groups like the NRA and Second Amendment activists believe the use of these statistics - provided by the reviled ATF - is the opening salvo in a government conspiracy to reinstate the expired assault weapons ban and start taking away Second Amendment rights.

The real challenge lies in the fact that there is extremely little hard data to buttress either argument with incontrovertible evidence. In this course, user will learn:

- Why Mexican cartels must obtain guns on the black market

- How cartels obtain guns in the US through straw buyers

- How cartel associates transport guns across the border

- Challenges to identifying and prosecuting straw buyers

- Facts and myths about Operation Fast & Furious

- The impact of the debate/controversy on law enforcement efforts to curb southbound weapons trafficking

This course will be useful material for students conducting research on Mexico's drug war, law enforcement/narcotics officers expanding their knowledge base, and any individual with an interest in weapons  trafficking. It is a streaming video combination of a narrated Power Point slide presentation and personal lecture.
